Overview
The CJIS Division is responsible for compiling, maintaining, and disseminating complete and accurate criminal history records, criminal incident and arrest reports, and statistics. Criminal history records include identifiable descriptions and notations of arrests, detentions, indictments, formal charges, and dispositions including sentencing, correctional supervision, and release.
Background checks are available in two forms:
- Personal identifier (name-based search) using name, date of birth, and social security number
- Fingerprint search
Personal Identifier Search (Name-Based)
Cost: $15.00 per request
Results: Considered a "possible match" — open records only, including convictions, arrest information less than 30 days old, prosecutor-filed charges awaiting disposition, and records with suspended imposition of sentence (SIS) during probation.
Available through the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS).
Fingerprint-Based Search
Requirements: Completed applicant fingerprint card (FD-258)
Cost: $20.00 per request (state only). Exceptions: $14.00 for concealed-carry weapons permits (Section 571.101 RSMo) and $14.00 for Department of Social Services foster care placement (Section 210.487 RSMo).
Results: Considered a "positive match" — includes all criminal history data, charges that were dismissed or found not guilty, SIS records after probation completion, and expunged/closed records per Chapter 610 RSMo.
Payment Information
Fees due upon submission, payable by check or money order to "State of Missouri - Criminal Record System Fund." Cash, credit cards, and foreign currency are not accepted. State agencies may be invoiced through SAM II. Out-of-country requests require US dollars by money order only.
Notarized Response: Additional $5.00 fee, available for both personal identifier and fingerprint search results.
MACHS — Missouri Automated Criminal History Site
MACHS is administered by the Missouri State Highway Patrol's CJIS Division, the central repository for Missouri criminal history files. Two portals are available:
MACHS Name Search Portal
Allows the public to request and receive personal identifier records online. Cost: $15.00 per search plus convenience fee. Accepts all major credit cards.

MACHS Fingerprint Search Portal
Allows the public to schedule fingerprinting appointments through IDEMIA, the state fingerprint vendor. IDEMIA uses electronic image capturing (livescan) to capture fingerprints, which are transmitted electronically to MSHP. Processing time is generally 7-10 business days.
Costs:
- IDEMIA service fee: $11.50 per applicant
- State background check total: $31.50 ($20.00 + $11.50)
- State and federal background check (authorized entities): $44.75 ($20.00 + $13.25 + $11.50)

Fingerprint Submission for Out-of-State Applicants
Applicants residing outside Missouri requiring fingerprint-based background checks should contact local law enforcement in their state for fingerprint assistance. An FBI standardized Applicant Fingerprint Card (FD-258) is required. Both ink and electronic fingerprint images are accepted; however, electronic transmission from out-of-state agencies is not allowed.
