What the division does
The Water Patrol Division oversees safety and regulation on Missouri's waterways. It administers the state's boater safety education program, under which any person born after January 1, 1984, shall possess a NASBLA approved boater safety card while operating a vessel on the lakes of the state, and any person born on or after January 1, 2006, shall possess a NASBLA approved boater safety card while operating a vessel on the waters of the state.
The division manages buoys and regattas throughout Missouri, permitting the buoys and signs that help boaters navigate safely and the organized marine events — fishing tournaments, poker runs, boat races, and fireworks displays — that affect navigation.
The division also coordinates the Patrol's Dive Team, provides swiftwater and flood response for the state, and oversees the Patrol's overall marine mission, working in partnership with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the United States Coast Guard on its recreational boating safety mission.
