To ensure we select the highest-quality applicants, all candidates must successfully complete a series of exams and screenings. The process typically takes between six and nine months, though timelines vary depending on the applicant and when they apply.

Your Path Starts Here
The Trooper Selection Process begins with completing and submitting an online application and Personal History Statement. During this step you will also select a date for your Physical Fitness Test.

Physical Fitness Test
Conducted at the General Headquarters Gymnasium, 1510 East Elm Street, Jefferson City. The test is a 500-meter row on a Concept2 rower at damper setting 5, and a 1.5-mile run. To pass, candidates must achieve an overall average score at or above the 40th percentile.

Polygraph Examination
A pre-employment screening tool used to verify the accuracy and completeness of the information you have provided. This is not a criminal investigation, but a truth-verification step in the hiring process.

Background Investigation
Candidates who successfully complete the polygraph are assigned a background investigator, who conducts a thorough review of your personal, professional, and financial history.

Oral Interview & Background Review
A panel interview with a Captain, Lieutenant, and Sergeant. The interview focuses on behavioral questions and an overall review of your background.

Conditional Offer of Employment
Candidates who complete the interview phase receive a conditional offer. You must then complete a psychological evaluation, a psychological interview, a medical evaluation, a vision and hearing examination, a drug screening, and an overall review of your application packet.

Final Offer & Physical Fitness Test
On receiving a final offer, you will be required to retake the physical fitness test. If you pass, you report for the first day of the Academy. If you do not pass, you have one more opportunity to take the test on the first day of the Academy. A second failure ends your candidacy.

The Academy
After passing the physical fitness test, you enter either the 25-week Training Academy or the 15-week Accelerated Training Academy, depending on your eligibility and prior experience.
