Missouri's Distracted Driving Law
Missouri law (Section 304.820 RSMo) prohibits drivers 21 years of age or younger from sending, reading, or writing text messages while driving. Violation of this law is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200.
What Is Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving. There are three main types of distraction:
• Visual: taking your eyes off the road
• Manual: taking your hands off the wheel
• Cognitive: taking your mind off driving
Texting while driving is especially dangerous because it involves all three types of distraction at the same time.
Focus on the Road
It is important to focus on the road while driving. Here are some tips:
• Put your phone away or turn it off while driving
• If you must make a call or send a text, pull over to a safe location first
• Set your GPS or music before you start driving
• Ask a passenger to handle calls or texts for you
• Never eat, drink, or groom while driving
• Secure pets and children before starting your trip
