What Is a Commercial Vehicle Officer?
The primary duties of a Missouri State Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Officer (CVO) are to promote safety and enforce Federal Regulations and State laws pertaining to commercial motor vehicles and drivers. A CVO conducts various levels of North American Standard inspections and post-crash analysis on commercial motor vehicles to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Other responsibilities include assisting the motoring public. A CVO must work under all climatic conditions, and work schedules change regularly.

What You Will Do
• Receive approximately 23 weeks of intensive academic and physical training at the Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy located in Jefferson City, MO.
• Train to become proficient in self-defense, cultural diversity, firearms, arrest procedures, and state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to commercial motor vehicles.
• Graduate from the Academy and serve for fourteen weeks under the guidance of a veteran Field Training Officer and undergo a one-year training period.
• Perform several levels of inspections on commercial vehicles.
• Strive to maintain a strong roadside and fixed facility inspection enforcement program to reduce the number and severity of commercial vehicle-involved crashes and to enhance homeland security.
• Enforce Federal Regulations and State laws pertaining to commercial motor vehicles and drivers.
• Assist the motoring public.
Where Do We Operate?
We operate throughout the state of Missouri in weigh stations and mobile units. Commercial Vehicle Officers work out of inspection facilities in Platte City, Mayview, Harrisonville, St. Clair, Bloomsdale, Wentzville, Joplin, Steele, Charleston, Willow Springs, Eagleville, and Watson. The division also has several mobile units across the state operating on the roadways.
Minimum Application Requirements
• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be at least twenty-one years of age at the time of commercial vehicle officer graduation.
• Must be a citizen of the United States.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver license at the time of appointment.
• Must obtain and maintain a valid CVE commission.
• Must be of good character and have never been convicted of a felony or any crime involving moral turpitude.
