What to do in a Traffic Crash

Immediately After a Crash

• Stop your vehicle immediately at the scene or as close as safely possible

• Turn on your hazard lights

• Check yourself and passengers for injuries

• Call 911 if there are injuries, significant damage, or the roadway is blocked

• Move vehicles out of traffic if possible and safe to do so

• Set out warning devices (flares, triangles) if available

Aid the Injured

• Do not move injured persons unless they are in immediate danger

• Administer first aid if you are trained to do so

• Keep injured persons warm and comfortable until help arrives

• Do not leave the scene of the crash

Exchange Information

Exchange the following information with the other driver(s) involved:

• Name, address, and phone number

• Driver license number and state

• Insurance company and policy number

• Vehicle make, model, year, and color

• License plate number and state

Reporting Requirements

Missouri law requires you to report a traffic crash to law enforcement if:

• Anyone is injured or killed

• Total property damage appears to exceed $500

• A vehicle must be towed from the scene

If the crash meets these criteria and law enforcement does not respond to the scene, you must file a Missouri Uniform Crash Report within 30 days.

Document the Scene

• Take photos of the vehicles, damage, license plates, and the scene

• Note the location, date, time, and weather conditions

• Get names and contact information of any witnesses

• Write down what happened while it is fresh in your memory

Obtaining a Crash Report

Traffic crash reports investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol can be obtained by:

• Visiting the MSHP website at www.statepatrol.dps.mo.gov

• Contacting the troop headquarters in the area where the crash occurred

• Reports are typically available within 5-10 business days after the crash

Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission

If your vehicle is damaged in a crash caused by a highway defect, you may file a claim with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. For information, contact MoDOT.
