Driving Missouri's Four Seasons

Spring Driving

Spring in Missouri can bring severe weather including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flooding. Be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

• Watch for flooded roadways. Never drive through standing water. Turn around, don't drown.

• Be alert for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. If you see a tornado, seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch.

• Watch for potholes caused by winter freeze-thaw cycles.

• Be aware of increased motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.

• Watch for farm equipment on rural roads.

Summer Driving

Summer heat can affect both drivers and vehicles. Take precautions to stay safe during hot weather.

• Check tire pressure regularly. Hot pavement can cause underinflated tires to blow out.

• Keep your cooling system in good condition. Overheating is a leading cause of summer breakdowns.

• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach deadly levels within minutes.

• Stay hydrated and take breaks on long trips to avoid fatigue.

• Watch for increased traffic in vacation and recreation areas.

• Be aware of construction zones and slow down for workers.

Autumn Driving

Fall brings shorter days, changing light conditions, and hazards unique to the season.

• Watch for wet leaves on the road which can be as slippery as ice.

• Be aware of deer activity, especially at dawn and dusk. October through December is peak season for deer-vehicle collisions.

• Adjust to earlier sunsets and reduced visibility.

• Watch for school buses and children walking to and from school.

• Keep headlights clean and in good working order as days get shorter.

• Be alert for fog, especially in low-lying areas near rivers and lakes.

Winter Driving

Winter weather in Missouri can include ice, snow, and extreme cold. Preparation is key to safe winter driving.

• Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle: blankets, flashlight, ice scraper, jumper cables, sand or kitty litter for traction.

• Allow extra time for travel during winter weather.

• Reduce speed on ice and snow. Remember that bridges and overpasses freeze first.

• Increase following distance to allow for longer stopping distances.

• If you start to slide, take your foot off the gas and steer in the direction you want to go. Do not slam on the brakes.

• Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before driving, including the roof, hood, and all windows.

• Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up.

Year-Round Safety Tips

• Always wear your seat belt.

• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Avoid distracted driving — put your phone away.

• Obey posted speed limits and adjust speed for conditions.

• Keep your vehicle properly maintained.

• Move over for emergency vehicles and highway workers.
