Endangered Silver Advisory

What Is an Endangered Silver Advisory?

An Endangered Silver Advisory (ESA) is designed to rapidly share information about missing and endangered senior adults aged 60 and older, or adults of any age with a verified cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other developmental disabilities.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol works with law enforcement agencies to activate ESAs when criteria are met, helping to locate vulnerable adults who may be in danger.

Endangered Silver Advisory Criteria

For an Endangered Silver Advisory to be activated, the following criteria must be met:

• The missing person is 60 years of age or older, OR has a verified cognitive impairment (e.g., Alzheimer's, dementia, developmental disability).

• The investigating agency has verified the person is missing.

• The person is believed to be endangered due to age, health, mental condition, or circumstances of disappearance.

• There is sufficient descriptive information available to believe a broadcast will help locate the person.

• The requesting law enforcement agency recommends the activation.

Activation Process

• The investigating law enforcement agency determines a person meets the ESA criteria.

• The agency submits an activation request to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

• MSHP reviews the request and activates the advisory if criteria are met.

• The advisory is distributed to law enforcement, media, and the public.

How the Public Is Notified

• Missouri law enforcement agencies are notified through MIAC email alerts.

• Broadcasters and media outlets are notified.

• Missouri Department of Transportation may activate electronic message signs.

• Missouri Lottery may display information on lottery terminals.

• Information is posted on the MO Alerts website.

How You Can Help

• Pay attention to Endangered Silver Advisories when they are issued.

• Look for the described person and vehicle.

• If you see the person or vehicle, call 911 immediately. Do not approach or follow.

• Share advisory information on social media to increase awareness.

• Sign up for email alerts at www.moalerts.mo.gov.

Preventing Wandering

For caregivers of persons with cognitive impairments, consider these steps to help prevent wandering:

• Enroll in a tracking or identification program.

• Install locks and alarms on doors and windows.

• Keep a recent photo and physical description available.

• Ensure the person carries identification at all times.

• Notify neighbors and local law enforcement about the person's condition.
