Prevention of Abduction and Exploitation

The safety of Missouri's children is a shared responsibility. Parents, caregivers, educators, and community members all play a role in protecting children from abduction and exploitation. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is committed to providing resources and education to help keep children safe.

Safety Rules for Children

Teach your children these important safety rules:

• Always check first with a parent or trusted adult before going anywhere

• Always take a buddy when going places

• Tell a parent or trusted adult if anyone makes you feel uncomfortable

• Say NO to anyone who tries to touch you inappropriately or asks you to do something wrong

• Know your full name, address, and phone number

• Know how to call 911 in an emergency

• Never accept gifts or rides from someone you don't know

Detecting Signs of Abuse

Be alert for these potential indicators that a child may be experiencing abuse:

• Unexplained injuries, bruises, or burns

• Changes in behavior or mood (withdrawal, aggression, fearfulness)

• Regression to younger behaviors (thumb-sucking, bed-wetting)

• Fear of certain adults or places

• Age-inappropriate sexual knowledge or behavior

• Declining school performance

• Running away or reluctance to go home

Internet Safety

The internet presents unique dangers to children. Help keep your children safe online:

• Keep computers and devices in common areas of the home

• Monitor your child's online activity and social media accounts

• Teach children never to share personal information online

• Know your child's online friends and contacts

• Set rules about internet use and enforce them consistently

• Report suspicious online activity to law enforcement

What to Do If a Child Is Missing

• Call 911 immediately

• Search the immediate area including closets, under beds, and vehicles

• Provide law enforcement with a recent photo and physical description

• Provide information about what the child was last wearing

• Note the time and location the child was last seen
