Protecting Your Home
Burglary is a crime of opportunity. Most burglars look for easy targets. By making your home more secure and less inviting to criminals, you can significantly reduce your risk of being burglarized.
Locks and Doors
• Use deadbolt locks on all exterior doors with a minimum one-inch throw
• Secure sliding glass doors with a metal rod or wooden dowel in the track
• Install a wide-angle peephole in your front door
• Reinforce door frames and strike plates with 3-inch screws
• Keep garage doors closed and locked
• Don't hide spare keys outside — give one to a trusted neighbor instead
Windows
• Install window locks on all windows
• Use window pins or key-operated locks for added security
• Consider security film for ground-floor windows
• Keep windows closed and locked when away from home
• Trim bushes near windows to eliminate hiding spots
Lighting and Visibility
• Install motion-activated lights around all entry points
• Keep the exterior of your home well-lit at night
• Use timers on interior lights when away to create the appearance someone is home
• Trim trees and shrubs that could provide cover for burglars
• Ensure your house number is visible from the street for emergency response
Alarm Systems
• Consider installing a monitored alarm system
• Display alarm company signs and stickers prominently
• Security cameras can serve as both a deterrent and evidence
• Video doorbells allow you to see who is at your door remotely
When You Are Away
• Stop mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor collect them
• Use timers on lights, radios, and televisions
• Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your home
• Don't announce your absence on social media
• Arrange for someone to mow your lawn if you'll be gone for an extended period
Apartment Safety
• Change or rekey locks when moving into a new apartment
• Ensure all entry points have working locks
• Get to know your neighbors
• Report broken locks, lights, or security features to your landlord immediately
• Don't buzz in people you don't know
If You Have Been Burglarized
• Do not enter your home if you suspect a burglar may still be inside
• Call 911 from a safe location
• Do not touch anything until law enforcement arrives
• Make a list of stolen items with descriptions and serial numbers
• Contact your insurance company
