What You Need On The Water

Missouri Boating Requirements

Whether you are a new boater or an experienced one, it is important to know what equipment and documents are required when operating a vessel on Missouri waters. The Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division enforces boating laws to keep everyone safe on the water.

Vessel Registration

• All motorized vessels must be registered with the Missouri Department of Revenue

• Registration numbers must be displayed on both sides of the bow

• Current registration decals must be displayed

• Registration certificate must be on board when the vessel is in use

Life Jackets (Personal Flotation Devices)

• One U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket must be on board for each person

• Children under 7 must wear a life jacket at all times while on a vessel under 26 feet

• Vessels 16 feet or longer must also have one throwable flotation device (Type IV)

• Life jackets must be readily accessible, not locked in storage

• Life jackets must be in good, serviceable condition and properly sized

Fire Extinguishers

• Required on vessels with enclosed engine compartments, enclosed fuel tanks, or enclosed living spaces

• Must be U.S. Coast Guard-approved marine type

• Must be readily accessible and in good working condition

• Check the gauge regularly to ensure it is fully charged

Navigational Lights

Navigational lights are required from sunset to sunrise and during periods of reduced visibility:

• Powerboats under 26 feet: Red and green bow lights plus a white stern light

• Sailboats under power: Same as powerboats

• Sailboats under sail only: Red and green bow lights plus a white stern light

• All lights must be visible for at least one mile

Boating Safety Education Card

Missouri law requires anyone born after January 1, 1984, to possess a Boating Safety Education Card to operate a motorized vessel on Missouri waters. Cards can be obtained by completing an approved boating safety course.

Personal Watercraft Requirements

• Operators must be at least 14 years of age

• All occupants must wear a life jacket

• Operation is prohibited from sunset to sunrise

• A lanyard-type engine cut-off switch must be attached to the operator
