Protect Your Investment
Boat theft is a growing problem. The Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division encourages all boat owners to take steps to protect their watercraft, motors, trailers, and equipment from theft.
Trailerable Boat Security
• Store your boat in a locked garage or fenced area when not in use
• Use a high-quality hitch lock and coupler lock on your trailer
• Remove a wheel or use a wheel lock (boot) on the trailer
• Chain your trailer to a fixed object with a hardened steel chain and padlock
• Install a motion-activated light where you store your boat
• Consider a GPS tracking device for your boat and trailer
• Never leave keys in the ignition
Dock Security
• Use quality locks on dock boxes and dock gates
• Chain your boat to the dock with a hardened steel cable or chain
• Install motion-activated lighting around your dock area
• Consider a security camera system
• Get to know your dock neighbors and watch out for each other
• Report any suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately
Personal Watercraft Security
• Store personal watercraft in a locked area when not in use
• Use a trailer lock and hitch lock
• Remove the lanyard key when not in use
• Engrave your driver license number on expensive equipment
Equipment and Motor Protection
• Record serial numbers for all equipment including motors, electronics, and trolling motors
• Photograph all equipment and keep records in a safe place
• Use outboard motor locks
• Engrave or mark equipment with your owner-applied number
• Keep an inventory of all boating equipment and accessories
Hull Identification Number (HIN)
All manufactured boats are required to have a Hull Identification Number (HIN). The HIN is a 12-character serial number that identifies the manufacturer, hull serial number, month and year of production, and model year. Know where your HIN is located and check it regularly to ensure it has not been tampered with.
If Your Boat Is Stolen
• Report the theft to law enforcement immediately
• Provide the HIN, registration number, and a detailed description
• Provide photographs and serial numbers of all equipment
• Notify your insurance company
• Check online classifieds and social media marketplace listings
