Be Prepared
Bank holdups can happen at any financial institution. Preparation and training are the best defenses. Every employee should know what to do before, during, and after a holdup.
• Know your institution's holdup procedures
• Participate in regular holdup training and drills
• Know the location of alarms and how to activate them
• Be observant of your surroundings at all times
• Keep bait money accessible in your cash drawer
During the Holdup
Your personal safety is the top priority. Money can be replaced; lives cannot.
• Stay calm. Try to remain as composed as possible.
• Cooperate. Do exactly as the robber says. Do not argue or resist.
• Do not make sudden movements. Keep your hands visible.
• Observe. Try to mentally note the robber's appearance, voice, clothing, and any distinguishing features.
• Activate the alarm only if you can do so safely and without being noticed.
• Include bait money with the cash you give the robber.
• Do not use a weapon unless you are a trained law enforcement officer.
• Note the direction of escape and any vehicle description if visible.
After the Holdup
• Call 911 immediately if the alarm has not been activated.
• Lock the doors to prevent the robber from returning.
• Do not touch anything the robber may have touched (evidence preservation).
• Write down everything you remember about the robber as soon as possible.
• Do not discuss what happened with other witnesses until law enforcement arrives.
• Remain available for law enforcement to take your statement.
Hostage Situations
If taken hostage during a bank holdup:
• Remain calm and follow instructions
• Do not try to be a hero
• Speak only when spoken to
• Try to establish rapport with the hostage taker if possible
• Be patient — law enforcement will work to resolve the situation safely
• If rescue occurs, drop to the floor and follow all commands from law enforcement
ATM Safety
• Be aware of your surroundings when using an ATM
• Use well-lit ATMs in visible locations
• Have your card ready before approaching the ATM
• Shield the keypad when entering your PIN
• If someone suspicious is nearby, leave and use a different ATM
• If confronted, give up the money — your safety is more important
