Straight Talk for Kids on Being Safe

Handling Emergencies

Sometimes emergencies happen and you need to know what to do. An emergency is when someone is badly hurt, very sick, or in danger. If you see an emergency:

• Stay calm

• Call 911 or ask an adult to call

• Tell the operator your name, where you are, and what happened

• Stay on the phone until help arrives or the operator tells you to hang up

Walking to School Safely

• Always walk with a buddy

• Use sidewalks whenever possible

• Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections

• Look left, right, and left again before crossing

• Follow the directions of crossing guards

• Never run into the street

• Walk facing traffic if there are no sidewalks

Stranger Danger

A stranger is someone you don't know. Most strangers are nice people, but some are not. Here are rules to help keep you safe:

• Never go anywhere with a stranger

• Never accept candy, gifts, or rides from a stranger

• If a stranger tries to grab you, yell loudly and run away

• Tell a trusted adult right away if a stranger tries to talk to you or makes you feel scared

• It's OK to say NO to an adult if they want you to do something that doesn't feel right

Home Alone Safety

• Always lock the doors and windows

• Never open the door for someone you don't know

• Never tell a caller that you are home alone

• Know how to reach your parents or a trusted neighbor

• Know your address and phone number

• Know how to call 911
