What Is Human Trafficking?
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery involving the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit people for labor or commercial sex. Victims can be any age, race, gender, or nationality. Trafficking occurs in every state, including Missouri.
Warning Signs
Potential indicators that someone may be a victim of human trafficking include:
• Appears malnourished or shows signs of physical abuse
• Avoids eye contact, appears fearful or anxious
• Is not free to come and go as they wish
• Is not in control of their own identification documents
• Is not allowed to speak for themselves
• Works excessively long hours
• Lives with employer or at the workplace
• Has few or no personal possessions
• Appears to be coached on what to say to law enforcement
