What Is a Gang?
A gang is a group of three or more individuals who engage in criminal activity and identify themselves with a common name or sign. Gangs are not limited to urban areas; they can be found in suburban and rural communities as well. Gang members may range in age from young children to adults.
Warning Signs of Gang Involvement
Parents, teachers, and community members should watch for these potential indicators:
• Sudden change in behavior, friends, or attitude
• Wearing specific colors or clothing styles consistently
• Using hand signs or symbols in drawings or graffiti
• Unexplained injuries or signs of fighting
• Possession of unexplained money, jewelry, or other items
• Declining grades or loss of interest in school
• Staying out late without explanation
• Increased secrecy about activities and associations
• Contact with the juvenile or criminal justice system
Why Do People Join Gangs?
• Desire for belonging, identity, and recognition
• Protection from bullying or other threats
• Peer pressure from friends or family members already in gangs
• Financial incentive from illegal activities
• Lack of positive role models or structured activities
• Excitement and perceived power
What Families Can Do
• Talk openly with your children about the dangers of gangs

• Encourage involvement in positive activities such as sports, clubs, and community service
• Set clear rules and expectations and enforce them consistently

• Be a positive role model and spend quality time together
