Missouri Window Tinting Laws
Missouri law regulates the amount of tinting allowed on motor vehicle windows. These laws are designed to balance privacy and aesthetics with safety concerns for both drivers and law enforcement officers.
Legal Tint Levels
The darkness of tint is measured by the percentage of light that can pass through the window (Visible Light Transmission or VLT). A higher percentage means more light passes through.
• Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top portion above the AS-1 line or the top 5 inches
• Front side windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in
• Back side windows: Any darkness may be used
• Rear window: Any darkness may be used
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my vehicle pass safety inspection with tinted windows?
Your vehicle will pass inspection as long as the tint on the windshield and front side windows meets the legal requirements. Back side windows and rear windows can have any level of tint.
What about factory-installed tint?
Factory-installed tint that came with the vehicle from the manufacturer is generally compliant with Missouri law. However, if additional aftermarket tint is applied over factory tint, the combined VLT must still meet the legal requirements.
Can I get a medical exemption?
Yes. Missouri law allows medical exemption permits for individuals who have a medical condition that requires protection from sunlight. A medical exemption permit allows darker tint on the front side windows. To obtain a permit:
• Obtain a written statement from a licensed physician
• Apply for the exemption through the Missouri State Highway Patrol
• The permit must be carried in the vehicle at all times
• The permit must be renewed annually
What happens if my tint is too dark?
If your front side windows or windshield tint does not meet the legal requirements, your vehicle will fail the Missouri safety inspection. You will need to have the illegal tint removed before your vehicle can pass inspection. You may also receive a traffic citation for illegal window tint.
Are there any restrictions on tint color?
Missouri law prohibits the use of red, yellow, or amber tinting material on any vehicle window. Reflective or mirrored tint is also restricted.
