Their Safety Is On Your Shoulders — Move Over. It's the Law.

Missouri State Highway Patrol — Public Information and Education Division

Slow Down. Move Over.

Missouri law helps provide a safer workplace for emergency personnel working on the roadways. When drivers see emergency vehicles and transportation workers performing their official duties, they are required to change lanes or reduce their speed.

Specifically, Missouri's Move Over law (Section 304.022 RSMo) requires drivers to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle displaying red or red and blue lights or a stationary vehicle displaying lighted amber or amber and white lights is present. Motorists must change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if they are on a multi-lane highway and can safely do so. If drivers can't change lanes safely, or they are on a two-lane highway, they must slow down while maintaining a safe speed.

A violation can result in fines and/or imprisonment.
